Why Do Hot Water Tanks Leak?

If you’re worried about a leaking water tank and don’t know what to do, you’ve probably come to the right place. But firstly, why do Hot Water Tanks Leak?

In this article, we’ll discuss some of the reasons why your hot water tank is leaking, whether you can fix it yourself and when to call our experts.

Reasons For Hot Water Tank Leak

There are any number of reasons why your hot water system may be leaking. Here, we’ll discuss some of the most common:

Old Tanks

Hot water tanks – be they gas, electric or even solar – are well known for having a long lifespan. But it doesn’t mean they won’t get old.

If it’s been longer than 10 years since you updated your hot water tank (depending on the type of system you have), your leak may be the signal that it’s time to do so.

Missing or Damaged Anode Rod

An anode rod helps keep your system safe, and helps purify your tank by attracting corrosive substances. When it disintegrates – or erodes completely – you may start to find leaks from your system.

Sediment Build Up

It’s the nature of most hot water systems that sediment will, over time, collect at the bottom of your tank. You can clean this out, and failure to do so on a regular basis will likely result in a leaky system.

Loose Drain Valves

Drain valves are an integral component to the smooth operation of most hot water tanks. But when they become loose (something that is bound to happen with age), you will likely experience leakage.

Too Much Pressure

Hot water tanks are meant to be able to deal with natural changes in water pressure. Usually, this is reduced through the T & P valve. However, when the valve is faulty or becomes overloaded with pressure, there is a build up of steam. With nowhere to go, it causes leaks to your system.

Cracks

Cracks can occur for lots of reasons, and it’s never good if they occur in your water tank. In most cases you’ll be up for a complete replacement, so it’s best to consult your plumber or gasfitter if this happens.

Can I Repair a Hot Water Tank Leak Myself?

We’re sure there are any number of DIY articles and videos out there that will encourage you to repair your leaky hot water system yourself. However, we would not be doing our job as professional plumbers and gasfitters if we encouraged you to follow these.

Attempting to fix a leak yourself – especially if you don’t know what you’re doing or the exact cause of your issue – could potentially cost you more time and money than you expected to save by attempting to do it yourself. Not to mention the hazards associated with such tasks.
